AX5203: Budget Both Axes Together

Review AX5203 channel and total current against simultaneous axis duty. Send the complete Beckhoff drive code and requirements for a scoped quote.

A two-axis servo drive is not simply two independent power supplies inside one housing. When a machine accelerates two mechanisms together, the load on their shared device can differ sharply from the load seen while testing each axis separately. That difference matters when a buyer is offered an AX5000 spare described only by its family name and a headline current rating.

The useful starting question is: which limits apply to each channel, and which apply to the complete device under the actual supply conditions? Answering that question early keeps a purchasing comparison from turning into an unplanned motion-system redesign.

Read channel current and total current separately

Beckhoff’s AX5203 product information describes two channels with adjustable current allocation, while requiring the permissible total current to be observed. Its startup documentation also separates single-phase and three-phase electrical data. These distinctions are part of the technical specification, not optional details to be checked after delivery.

An enquiry for the AX5203-0000 dual-axis servo drive should therefore include the complete installed label and the actual supply arrangement. A shortened listing does not establish every hardware or firmware suffix of an offered unit. Ask the supplier to identify the exact unit before the site’s engineer assesses it.

Do not add two motor nameplate numbers and stop there. Nameplate data is useful, but the application’s demand changes during acceleration, steady operation and deceleration. The engineer needs the duty of both axes, the conditions under which their demands coincide, and the relevant device limits. A small unloaded demonstration does not reproduce the production cycle.

Build a duty profile before comparing spares

Use existing approved motion records where available. Note which movements overlap, how long high-demand periods last, and whether the production recipe changes those overlaps. Mark the difference between measured operating evidence and estimates. Do not create a new live-machine test simply to obtain data during an unresolved fault; qualified personnel should decide what can be reviewed safely.

A useful illustration is a transfer mechanism and a clamping axis that normally move at different times. A revised sequence may cause their higher-demand periods to overlap. That is an illustrative scenario, not a report of a customer incident. It explains why a spare approved for yesterday’s sequence should not automatically be accepted after an application change.

Peak capability must not be treated as unlimited continuous capability. The AX5000 startup manual provides separate electrical tables and conditions for the relevant hardware. Use the version that applies to the installed device. Avoid copying a convenient figure from another generation or operating arrangement into the procurement specification.

A larger single-axis unit answers a different question

The AX5118-0000-0200 servo drive is a useful contrast, not a proposed substitute for AX5203. Beckhoff identifies AX5118 as a single-channel device. A higher current figure on one channel does not create a second independently controlled axis, nor does it establish that the existing cabinet, connections and project can accept it.

If engineering proposes changing the drive architecture, scope that as a modification. It may affect space, supply arrangements, motor connections, feedback, protection, project configuration and acceptance testing. The buyer’s job is to keep that modification separate from a like-for-like replacement request. Combining the two into a single “equivalent or better” line makes competing quotations difficult to evaluate.

The same discipline applies within a family. An alternative revision may be acceptable, but acceptance needs a documented basis. Record the complete offered designation and the conditions that remain to be checked. Do not let a shared AX5000 name stand in for a compatibility review of the actual hardware and machine application.

Specify evidence that matches the purchasing decision

A supplier can identify the unit, describe its condition and provide a defined test report. Ask whether the report covers both channels where applicable and what loads or test conditions were used. A statement that the display illuminated does not demonstrate output performance; a successful single-channel exercise does not establish every shared-device condition.

At the same time, keep the demand realistic. A parts supplier usually cannot reproduce the entire customer’s machine, motion profile and safety architecture. Separate hardware acceptance from the site’s application validation. State what evidence is required for shipment and what must be demonstrated during commissioning, with responsibilities and any unresolved assumptions written down.

Once the spare is accepted, preserve the label photographs, approved device identification and application review with its stock record. Revisit the review when the machine’s duty changes. A spare register is more useful when it states where an item is approved for use than when it merely lists every drive that shares the same vendor name.

Questions buyers should resolve

Can unused current on one AX5203 channel be assigned to the other?

Beckhoff describes flexible allocation, but it remains subject to the applicable channel and device limits. Have the engineer use the exact hardware documentation and supply conditions. Do not treat flexibility as permission to exceed the total rating.

Does a higher peak-current figure make a spare safer to select?

Not on its own. Peak duration, continuous demand, simultaneous axis duty and operating conditions all matter. Compare the complete requirement rather than choosing the largest number printed in a quotation.

Can AX5118 replace a two-channel AX5203?

Not as a simple current-rating substitution. AX5118 is a single-channel device, while AX5203 provides two channels. Any architecture change requires an engineered design and validation plan; the two catalog pages are not a cross-reference approval.

What information should accompany an urgent spare enquiry?

Provide complete labels, supply arrangement, channel usage, quantity, required condition and destination. Add the approved application requirements that affect acceptance, while keeping sensitive machine programs within the plant’s authorized review process.

Ask for the correct device, not an approximate ampere rating

Send ZYPLC the full AX5000 designation and the evidence your team requires from the offered unit. We can scope the hardware enquiry and distinguish one-axis from two-axis options. Your motion engineer should confirm the application limits before procurement treats any alternative as an approved spare.
