How To Prioritize Network Module Spares When A Fix Is Not Planned

When an advisory says a device has no simple fixed-version path, the sourcing conversation changes. The June 2026 CISA notice for Mitsubishi MELSEC iQ-F Ethernet communication hardware is one example, but the lesson applies across many PLC, HMI, drive, gateway, and remote I/O families. If firmware is not the clean exit, spare availability becomes part of the risk plan.

Use three priority levels

Priority two is for modules that reduce visibility, reporting, or remote diagnostics but do not immediately stop the line. Priority three is for low-risk or easily bypassed equipment.
This simple ranking helps purchasing teams avoid buying the easiest parts first. The easiest part to quote is not always the part that protects the next shutdown window.
Lead time is part of the technical decision
A spare with a two-day lead time and a spare with a ten-week lead time should not be treated the same. Ask suppliers for condition, test status, available quantity, estimated dispatch date, and whether accessories or terminal plugs are included. For communication modules, revision and firmware information may be as important as price.
